Stoughton Side - The Stoughton Bunad
The Stoughton Bunad was designed to be a mix of elements from the many regional areas of Norway and reflect the composition of our community. Marion Keebaugh, who was instrumental in bringing Norwegian costumes to Stoughton, designed the exquisite Stoughton Bunad. In the early 1970’s she began teaching a class in making Norwegian folk costumes or bunads. In 1995, she designed the Stoughton bunad and it debuted in 1997. Susan Albright was the first Syttende Mai Queen to wear the Stoughton bunad and was the model for the Bunad on the 2021 coin.
Norway Side - Viking Compass
The Vegvisir (pronounced “VEGG-vee-seer”) is known as the Viking/Nordic compass or runic compass and is comprised of eight Viking rune staves believed to represent North, South, East and West and the intercardinal directions (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast). A nail, in the middle, would tell the direction by using the position of its shadow throughout the day.
