Stoughton Side - Oak Opening
At the time of its founding, Stoughton was a rolling land of thick forests along with park-like groves of oak and hickory trees, interspersed with crystal clear lakes, rivers and streams and rich prairies lush with grasses. These open grassy areas are referred to as oak openings. In this land of “Oak Openings”, midway between Janesville and Madison, there was a plot of land, in the bend of what was then called the Catfish River and is now known as the Yahara River.
Norway Side - The Albion
The Albion sailed in 1847 (175 years ago), transporting immigrants from Norway to America. The Albion, captained by Captain Brock, set sail from Bergen, Norway on May 6th and arrived in New York on June 30th, 1847.
