Since 1969, Stoughton's Syttende Mai festival has crowned a King and Queen, selected based on their long-term community involvement, dedication to Stoughton's betterment, and commitment to celebrating and promoting the city’s Norwegian heritage. Nominated by fellow community members, the King and Queen serve as proud ambassadors for the festival and the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce, participating in major events and wearing their bunads—traditional Norwegian costumes—throughout the celebration.

The Syttende Mai Festival is now accepting nominations for the 2026 King and Queen! Know someone who fits the bill? Read the guidelines and eligibility criteria below before submitting a nomination.

Syttende Mai King & Queen Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the honor of serving as the Syttende Mai King or Queen, nominees must meet the following requirements:

Residency: Must be residents within the Stoughton Area School District boundary for a minimum of 10 accumulated years.
Availability: Must be able to attend pre-Syttende Mai events and be available for the full week of Syttende Mai (Monday through Sunday).
Community & Chamber Involvement: Must have contributed significantly to the betterment of Stoughton—through business, community service, volunteerism, or other impactful efforts—and have participated in or supported Stoughton Chamber of Commerce activities in a meaningful way.
Representation Skills: Must possess the skill set necessary to represent the Syttende Mai Festival and the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce at speaking engagements, interviews, and other public appearances.
Commitment: Must have both the willingness and physical ability to devote the time and energy required to fulfill the duties of King or Queen.
Cultural Appreciation: While Norwegian heritage is not required, an understanding and appreciation of Stoughton’s Norwegian roots and the significance of the Syttende Mai festival is considered beneficial.
Nomination Guidelines:
- Nominees do not need to be a married couple; individuals may be nominated.
- Self-nominations are not permitted. Individuals or couples must be nominated by others.

Final selection of the Syttende Mai King and Queen is solely the responsibility of the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce’s Syttende Mai Royalty Selection Committee. All nominations are treated with the utmost confidentiality. Nominations must be received prior to September 1 in order to be considered for the next year’s festival.
